Why is this a hot topic?

Do a quick search in Google News for Gun Control to find out what's going on right now.  For news that is a little older, try the database ProQuest Newsstand, searching again for Gun Control or Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Try starting with our catalog, URSUS.  Click on LC Subject and type in Gun Control United States.  You'll find things like:

The Encyclopedia of Gun Control and Gun Rights

Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America

You also might want to look at the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics's  Firearms and Crime Statistics

 

How to find journal articles -

Try using some of our specialized databases.  For this topic try using the Advanced Search option in the databases Sociology Abstracts and/or Worldwide Political Science Abstracts (if you are off campus, you will need to enter your name and the barcode number on the back of your MaineCard)

An Advanced Search on Gun Control as a Subject in either of these databases will come up with articles like:

Mass Shootings in Schools: the Worst Possible Case for Gun Control (Kleck, G., 2009. American Behavioral Scientist, 52, 10, 1447-1464)

How Many More Guns? Estimating the Effect of Allowing Licensed Concealed Handguns on a College Campus (Bouffard, J.A. et.al., 2012. Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 27, 2, 316-343)

Another database to try is the Social Science Research Network.  Search for Gun Control in the title to find things like this forthcoming Fordham Urban Law Journal article: "The Great Gun Control War of the the 20th Century - And Its Lessons for Gun Laws Today," by David B. Kopel.
