History

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was organized in 1844 by George Williams. It was founded in London, England and was established in North America in 1851. The group grew out of a need for addressing the needs of young men. The organization is an institution organized and supported by the people of a community to provide for the physical, intellectual and moral welfare of its young men and boys. Once an organization created to uplift young men and boys, it has survived the wars and expanded its services to include services for families. Maine State YMCA continues to provide a place to belong and learn the values that guide and unite its members, building community ideals as well as personal character.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains a variety of materials, with the majority bound as publications and brochures. These include records from Maine YMCA organizations as well as New Hampshire and Vermont. The earliest records date to 1881. The collection is arranged in one series with two sub-series: YMCA Records and Publications Etc.

The first sub-series, YMCA Records, provides records of executive committee meetings from 1881-1906, the lady’s auxiliary records from 1927-1943, and the State secretary records for 1882-1884. The Junior Legislative booklet of 1943 and a proposal for a state YMCA training camp for leaders are also included.

The second sub-series, Publications, Etc., includes annual reports, bulletins from state executive committees, community efficiency conference publications, county boys’ conferences, leadership conferences, secondary school conferences, state boys’ conferences, New Hampshire and Vermont conventions, state conventions, association notes and newsletters.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by subject.
