Historical/Biographical Information:

The Woman’s Club of Orono was founded in 1887 as the Ladies Literary Club.  They joined the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1892.  The name was changed to the Woman’s Club of Orono in 1900.  The club has been dedicated to literary advancements and social service since the beginning.  They have advocated many women’s causes, especially suffrage.  The club has fostered community welfare in many ways, including scholarships, support of the public library, and sponsoring many community, cultural, and educational awards.  A complete history of the club is located in Cage Box 44 Folder 12.

Contents: 

The collection consists of the records of the Woman’s Club of Orono from the founding of the Club.  Included are minutes, annual reports, yearbooks, scrapbooks, newsletters, histories, and financial records.  Many prominent Orono families are represented in the membership.
