J. Norman Wilkinson was born in Liverpool, England, on May 14, 1930. He emigrated to the United States in 1957 and earned his B.A. in Theatre and Speech in 1964, his M.A. in 1965, and his Ph.D. in Theatre in 1970, each from the University of Michigan. He taught at Michigan from 1965 to 1970 and then came to the University of Maine, where he was a professor of theater for many years.

In addition to his teaching activities, Wilkinson was an actor, playwright and theater director. He served as director of the Maine Masque while at the University of Maine. Formed in 1906, Maine Masque supports and produces theater productions at the university as well as organizing and sponsoring various theater-related activities both on and off the campus.

Norman Wilkinson married Dorothy Ann Midgley and they have two children, Susan and Norman. Wilkinson is a resident of Wells, Maine.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists primarily of Wilkinson’s files documenting various plays performed by the Maine Masque at the University of Maine from 1971 to 1996. The files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the play and typically contain scripts, photographs, notes on the productions, newspaper clippings and reviews, press releases, etc.

The collection also contains information about the activities of Maine Masque and includes newspaper clippings, photographs of performances, playbills, press releases, etc., covering the time period 1970-1996.

Several theater-related theses are also included in the papers. Wilkinson served on the advisory committee for several of the theses.
