Clarissa Thayer and her son Hollis Thayer ran a general store in Winterport, Maine between 1853 and the 1880’s. Apparently it was not very successful because they were always in arrears. Hollis was an interesting character; he spent some time in jail. Clarissa’s husband was indicted for murder but was acquitted and convicted of assault and battery and served 9 months (see letter).
