Biography
Ellen Louise Payson, the daughter of Edgar Robinson Payson and Harriet Estabrook Payson, was born in Portland, Maine on November 12, 1894. Known in her personal and professional life as Louise, she trained as a landscape architect at the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture for Women in Groton, Massachusetts. After graduating from Lowthorpe in 1916, Payson started work with landscape architect Ellen Shipman at her studio in Cornish, New Hampshire and later in Shipman’s office in New York. Payson also appears to have attended Columbia University’s School of Architecture from 1922 to 1923, perhaps as a tutee rather than an enrolled student. She later traveled extensively in Europe.
Payson established her own office in New York City in 1927 and gained widespread recognition for her designs for private estates in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. Despite working primarily during the Great Depression, Payson received commissions of varying size and scope and documentation of seventy projects exists. She closed her office in 1941, first contributing to the war effort by working in 1943-1944 at Eastern Aircraft in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and then sailing for Lisbon as a volunteer relief worker. Later she returned to Maine, purchasing a farm in Windham. She continued to design gardens for friends and family in Maine and to work on the design of her own farm.
Louise Payson died on June 8, 1977 while on a cruise in the Mediterranean.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of ca. 525 architectural drawings made or used by landscape architect Louise Payson. Included are landscape plans, contour drawings, planting plans, and detail drawings of fences, garden paths, gates, terraces and outbuildings. There are also photographs of a few of the finished projects. Most of the drawings were done in the 1920s and 1930s primarily for clients in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, with a few for clients in Maine, Massachusetts and Missouri.
The plans are arranged alphabetically by name of client. Within each folder they are arranged chronologically with undated plans coming last. Some folders include drawings by architects who designed the houses on the estates; among these are designs by R. Clipston Sturgis, Mott B. Schmidt, S. Merrell Clement and Leigh French among others.
