History

This collection contains records of the Martinon Lumber Company; the company had its main office in Bangor, Maine, with a Canadian office in St. John, New Brunswick. Isaiah K. Stetson served as president, Frank C. Hinckley as vice president, Irving G. Stetson as treasurer, and Waldo P. Lowell as general manager. Lumbering operations were carried on at various places in New Brunswick, including Musquash and Rocky Gulch, as well as in Grand River, Quebec. The company dealt in spruce, pine and hemlock lumber. The company is listed in the Bangor city directories from 1916 to 1926.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains business records of this company from 1916-1926. The records are arranged in four series: executive records, financial records, purchasing records, and sales records. The arrangement and folder headings are those assigned by the company during its active use of the materials.

The first series, executive records, is the largest in the collection and is made up primarily of incoming and outgoing correspondence, arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by correspondent. Many letters are between the Bangor and New Brunswick offices and are to or from Irving G. Stetson, Frank Hinckley, or Waldo Lowell. Other frequent correspondents include William G. Barker Co., lumber commission merchants in Boston; Walstein R. Chester & Co., wholesale lumber dealers in Boston; Morse & Buffum Co., wholesale lumber dealers in Providence, R.I.; and Chaffee Brothers Co., lumber dealers in Oxford, Mass.

The second series, financial records, contains mainly statements and invoices for materials sold by Martinon, as well as a few records of inventories and expense account statements of Waldo Lowell.

The purchasing records series includes various invoices to Martinon, 1918-1925, for goods and materials it purchased. These invoices are arranged alphabetically by company.

The last series, sales records, contains information about lumber orders filled by Martinon, arranged by date and order number. Paperwork with each order number includes a schedule of lumber shipped, outlining board feet in the order; a copy of the order; charges; a bill of lading; and a freight bill.

The user may also want to consult the Stetson Family Papers (MS 480), which contain records of the Martinon Lumber Company, mostly pre-dating the records in this collection.
