History
The Maine State Grange, known formally as the Maine State Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry, was organized in Maine in 1873, just six years after the national organization was organized in Washington, D.C. The first chapter was established in Hampden with a chapter in Lewiston following shortly thereafter. Local community chapters were called subordinate granges; some local chapters also had juvenile or junior granges for members 5 to 14 years old. Pomona granges were county level granges that included a number of subordinate granges within their jurisdiction.
As well as providing a place for rural men and women to meet, learn and socialize, the Grange also worked to improve economic and social conditions, engaging in cooperative activities, offering insurance and taking positions on important legislative issues. It supported prohibition, advocated for local schools and the University of Maine, and worked with the Cooperative Extension Service to introduce new methods of farming to its members.
The Grange grew rapidly after its formation, having over 200 chapters by 1876 and reaching almost 600 chapters at its peak. After 1960 the number of Granges began to decline sharply. However the organization is still active at the state level and in many communities in Maine and offers opportunities for people interested in agriculture and the rural lifestyle to meet, learn about and support this segment of the state’s economy.
Scope and Content Note
The collection contains records of individual subordinate, juvenile and Pomona chapters of granges from many communities in Maine. Records are arranged alphabetically by name of grange. They typically consist of secretary’s minutes and cash books, roll books containing lists of members, treasurer’s financial records, and dues account books listing dues paid by members.
The collection also contains eight volumes of journals of the proceedings of the annual sessions of the Maine State Grange dating from 1874 when the first session was held through the 44th session held in 1917. These volumes contain minutes of meetings, transcripts of speeches and outlines of work done by various committees; as such they give a very detailed look at the activities of the Grange at the state level.
