History

The Maine Outing Club at the University of Maine was formed in 1923 to promote year-round outdoor activities for the students at the university, all of whom are eligible for membership. Encompassing interests from conservation to skiing, the club meets weekly and organizes frequent hikes and other trips for its members. Club members are active in maintaining a section of the Appalachian Trail in Maine. The club also owns a rustic cabin built in 1958 near the Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Carrabassett Valley, Maine.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains records of activities of the Maine Outing Club at the University of Maine. The records were received in several donations from the club, the most recent group arriving in 2008.

The collection contains administrative records of the club including copies of the constitution; minutes of meetings of the executive council, the Pack and Pine; minutes of general club meetings, 1933-1980; and correspondence, 1947-1960s. These are followed by subject files of the club, labeled as they were received and arranged alphabetically.

Box 3 contains cabin logs, 1965-2003, maintained at the club’s cabin and containing comments of guests and day-hikers in the area. The box also contains cabin logs from Bald Mountain Brook Lean-to, Joe’s Hole Lean-to and Moxie Bald Mountain Lean-to, all located along the section of the Appalachian Trail maintained by the club.

Box 4 contains photograph albums and memorabilia from club activities. Box 5 contains scrapbooks compiled by club members.
