Biography

David and Iris Hoffman of Rockport, Maine, were the collectors of these postcards. They donated them to the Special Collections Department in 1978, 1982 and 1983.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains approximately 26,760 postcards covering a wide variety of places and subjects. The part of the collection given in 1978 consists of ca. 8200 cards arranged by subject and includes cards showing animals, children, holiday scenes, etc. It also contains cards signed by various postcard artists.

In 1982 approximately 6000 additional postcards were given; this part of the collection includes 650 views of scenes in the state of Maine.

In 1983 the final part of the collection, over 5000 postcards of ocean liners, steamships, battleships and steamboats, was given to the library.

The collection is arranged by subject and labeled as it was when received from the Hoffmans.
