History

The Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, located in Deer Isle, Maine, was founded in 1950. Originally located near Haystack Mountain in Montville, Maine, it was the idea of a group of craft artists in the Belfast area. The School also gained financial support from Mary Beasom Bishop who had a summer home in the area. Mrs. Bishop was a resident of Flint, Michigan, who after taking a brief course at the Penland School of Handicrafts in Penland, North Carolina, realized the need for more schools of this type.

Francis S. Merritt was the first director of the school; his wife, Priscilla Merritt also took an active role in its administration. Francis Merritt had trained at art schools in Boston and at the Yale University School of Fine Arts. He was formerly the director of the Flint Institute of Arts in Flint, Michigan, as well as having taught at Abbot Academy, Andover, Massachusetts; Colby Junior College, New London, New Hampshire; and Cranbrook, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. While serving as director of Haystack he was also director of the Art Department at Bradford Junior College, Haverhill, Massachusetts.

The first session of the school began in July, 1951, with six students enrolled in four departments: ceramics, woodworking, weaving and block printing. With the support of Mary Bishop and the work of the director and staff, the school grew in both size and scope as well as in its talented students and faculty. By its 25th anniversary in 1975, enrollment was 305 students.

In 1957 it was learned that a state highway would be relocated close to the school’s property, decreasing its economic and esthetic value. A new site was found in Sunshine on the coast of Deer Isle. The new campus was designed by the architect Edward Larrabee Barnes and was dedicated in July 1961. The Gateway Project was launched in 1978 to build the Mary Bishop Amphitheater and the Francis S. Merritt Gallery/Forum, both completed between 1979 and 1980.

Francis Merritt served as director until his retirement in 1978; he died in 2000. Howard Evans was the director from 1978 to 1987, when Stuart Kestenbaum became the third director in the school’s history.

The School is open to adults 18 years and older and offers studio-based workshops in such things as clay, glass, metals, paper, woodworking, blacksmithing, etc. An international craft school, it welcomes everyone from beginners to advanced professionals and has approximately 85 participants. Along with its summer sessions it also sponsors the Open Door workshop, begun in 1982 for Maine residents, and the New England Workshop, a shorter fall session for New England residents begun in 1994.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains administrative subject files, correspondence, information about admissions, and financial records of the school. It was given to Fogler Library in 1970, 2000 and 2005. The original material is arranged first in the collection, followed by the material received in later donations.

The collection is arranged in six series: Administrative subject files; Correspondence; Admissions records; Financial records; and Additions to collection, 2000 and 2005. Series II and V are further subdivided into various sub-series. File folder headings for the most part are those assigned by the school.

The researcher should note that a large part of the material received in 1970 was microfilmed in 1982 by the Archives of American Art (their microfilm reel numbers 2416-2422). A memo found with the collection indicates that in the microfilming process, some personal letters, duplicate documents and material not relating directly to Haystack were separated and not microfilmed, leading to some loss of original order and original file names. These file folders are indicated by enclosure in square brackets in the box list which follows.

Series I, Administrative subject files, is arranged alphabetically by file heading and contains information about programs and activities at the school, articles and clippings about the school and its staff, as well as annual reports and reports of meetings. Two scrapbooks of clippings, brochures, etc., documenting the history of the school, 1951-1969, are also found here.

Series II, Correspondence, is the largest group of materials. It is arranged in two sub-series: Correspondence, etc., to Mary Bishop, 1950-1966; and Correspondence of Francis and Priscilla Merritt, 1955-1969. The Merritt correspondence includes both incoming and outgoing letters to and from past and prospective students and faculty, members of the crafts community, school supporters and craft artists throughout the world. Although some of it is labeled personal correspondence, almost all of it pertains to activities at the school, and the obvious devotion and hard work of both Francis and Priscilla Merritt on its behalf is shown throughout.

Series III, Admissions records, 1961-1970, includes general inquiries, applications, registrations, and scholarship applications.

Series IV, Financial records, 1956-1968, contains summaries of receipts and expenditures, deposit slips and check stubs, bills and invoices, and information about the building fund account, 1959-1965.

Series V-VI, Additions to collection, 2000 and 2005, is arranged alphabetically by subject and includes general subject files, information about school advertising, the building of the Bell Tower in 1970 and the Gateway project in 1979, the college credit program, Haystack exhibitions, 1958-1978, and information on special named or themed sessions at the school. It also includes articles and press releases and course catalogs.
