History

The Fryeburg Business and Professional Women’s Club, a regional chapter of the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, was founded in 1928 in Fryeburg, Maine, for the purpose of promoting the interests of business and professional women in the area. Its activities included awarding a prize to the outstanding female student in the commercial course at Fryeburg Academy, arranging a career day for senior girls there, and sponsoring adult education courses in the community. During World War II members took part in civil defense programs and first aid classes. The Club also regularly aided the community and sponsored activities such as dental clinics, hot lunch programs, donations to the local library and holiday parties for children.

The club disbanded in 1970; the minutes of the meeting of April 16, 1970 note that after discussion of candidates for office for the coming year, “the conclusion was that no candidates were available, and it was decided that the Club has served its purpose.”
