History
The Esther Eayres Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in Orono, Maine, in 1918. The list of charter members found in the collection indicates that the chapter was “so named from the first white child born in Orono ... April 30th 1777.”
The original members were all members of the National Organization of the D.A.R. and had been members of other local chapters but decided that a chapter should be established in Orono, its location in a university town perhaps giving it greater strength.
The objects of the chapter as set forth in its bylaws were to honor those who achieved American independence by the acquisition and protection of historical spots and the erection of monuments, by the encouragement of historical research and publication in relation to the American Revolution, and the promotion of the celebration of all patriotic anniversaries. Any woman was eligible for membership who was descended from someone who had served as a soldier, sailor or civil officer during the American Revolution.
