Literacy to Go

 About Literacy to Go
Literacy to Go is  a University of Maine grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Old Town Public Library, Old Town Elementary School Library, and the Maine State Library are working with the University of Maine for the project that involves creating kits to help developing early literacy training for librarians  working with parents/caregivers.
About Literacy to Go Kits
Literacy to Go Kits are designed to support early literacy by developing world knowledge and promoting a love of reading. Each of the 22 kits is based on a topic in the natural or social world that is commonly taught in preschool or daycare. Every kit contains three books based to support knowledge on the topic. Two of the books are designed for the parent/caregiver to read-aloud to the child and consist of an informational book (nonfiction) and a fiction book. The third book is a very simple informational book that is designed to be read by the child to the parent/caregiver. Books in this category can be wordless or have short predictable text that is based on the realistic illustrations.
In addition to the books, each kit contains a parent guide containing suggested questions, and activities to promote conversation and deeper thinking for each topic. Also included are toys so that the child can participate in dramatic play around each topic.
