Staff News
Jim Bird conducted eighteen library instruction sessions this semester in the biological sciences and engineering. He will lead a roundtable discussion on the Internet and the future of the academic library at the Institute of Food Technologists Annual Meeting in New Orleans this June. Jim recently chaired a digital library project that developed a new "virtual library," the Fogler Library Climate and Weather Resources Web site (see the article), released in the first week of March. He also created a guide to our new ScienceDirect service. At the request of Dean Albright, Jim is serving on the campus Graduate School Curriculum Committee, the Undergraduate Program and Curriculum Committee, and the Faculty and Instructional Development Committee.
Nancy Curtis developed a workshop on NSF's FastLane program, which she presented twice in April. She will attend the Special Libraries Association Annual Conference in San Antonio this June, continuing in her position as Treasurer of the Biomedical and Life Sciences Division. She is also currently serving on the Nominating Committee for the Maine Health Science Libraries and Information Consortium. Within the Library, she is chairing the Professional Personnel Committee, which evaluates and recommends librarians and other Fogler professional staff for continuing appointment and promotion. Nancy continues to review science books for Library Journal.
Lois Nase attended the 24th Annual Patent and Trademark Depository Library (PTDL) Training Seminar, held in March, in Arlington, Virginia. This seminar provided an excellent introduction to the PTDL program and new initiatives of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Lois will pursue opportunities to publicize the Fogler Library PTDL to inventors, small businesses, and school groups around the state. As the new liaison for departments in the College of Engineering, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, she will be meeting with faculty to learn about their research and instruction programs, and to develop new ways to support these programs.
