Database Overview

SciFinder Scholar is the expanded electronic version of Chemical Abstracts. It includes citations and abstracts for journal articles and other materials on chemistry and related areas, including agriculture, biology and medicine, engineering, food science and nutrition, geology, and physics. It also includes the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) REGISTRY (CAS Registry Numbers, physical property data, and structure diagrams), CASREACT (reaction data), CHEMCATS (chemical source data), and CHEMLIST (regulatory information) databases. SciFinder Scholar covers literature from the late 19th century to present.

Users of this database must install client software on their own workstations. The latest version available is SciFinder Scholar 2007, for Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), Windows XP (SP1 or SP2), Windows Vista (Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions), and Macintosh OS X (10.3 or 10.4).

Getting Started

Minimum hardware and software requirements

Macintosh Leopard (OS 10.5) users launch instructions:

  1. In Applications folder, right click or control-click on SciFinder Scholar application.
  2. Select Get Info.
  3. Check the Open Using Rosetta box.

Windows Macintosh
  1. Contact one of the SciFinder Scholar Site Administrators for the download site URL, and the user name and password for downloading the software. You must use your FirstClass account to request this data. It will not be sent to other e-mail accounts.
  2. Point your Web browser to the download site.
  3. Download sfs2007.exe (~12.2 MB self-extracting executable).
  4. Close all other Windows applications running on your computer.
  5. Run sfs2007.exe to install the software
  6. Click Setup. Follow the prompts to complete the installation. If you have a previous version of SciFinder Scholar installed on the computer, select Yes when presented with the option to overwrite files. Select the Typical installation option. If you are asked about a Custom Site Files disk, click No. Ignore the option to "Test Connection".
  7. If this is the first time you have installed SciFinder Scholar software on the computer while affiliated with the University of Maine, you will need a UMaine site preferences or site.prf file. You must use your FirstClass account to request this file. It will not be sent to other e-mail accounts. Copy the file without opening it to the SFSCHLR folder.
  8. Start SciFinder Scholar 2007 to test the software. Please remember to log out when you are done.
  9. Delete sfs2007.exe from your computer.

  2. Point your Web browser to the download site.
  3. Download sfs2007.dmg (~14.1 MB Disk Image File) to your desktop or to a download folder.
  4. If the file does not automatically mount, double click on it.
  5. Double click the desktop SciFinder Scholar icon.
  6. Drag and drop the SciFinder Scholar Application Package into your Applications folder.
  7. Eject (unmount) the desktop SciFinder Scholar Volume.
  8. Optional: Create a "SciFinder Scholar" alias for your dock or desktop.
  9. If this is the first time you have installed SciFinder Scholar software on the computer while affiliated with the University of Maine, you will need a UMaine site preferences or site.prf file. You must use your FirstClass account to request this file. It will not be sent to other e-mail accounts. Within Home Folder:Library:Application Support, create a SciFinder Scholar folder. Save the site.prf into this folder without opening it.
  10. Start SciFinder Scholar 2007 to test the software. Leopard (OS 10.5) users: see launch instructions above. Please remember to log out when you are done.
