Chemical Abstracts. (Sci Index QD7.C44) Online
access now available through
SciFinder Scholar,1907 to present. Software needs to be loaded on
your computer to utilize SciFinder Scholar. We have a contract for just one user at a time but the
service is available almost 24/7. This is the major
indexing source for the worldwide chemical literature. Published by the American Chemical Society. Approximately 14,000 journals are monitored, plus patents,
conference proceedings, and other types of literature.
Compendex (Engineering Index). Coverage is 1970 - Present. The best
multidisciplinary engineering database that indexes over 5000 engineering
journals, conferences and technical reports. Use their subject headings to
obtain more precise results. Access is provided by the following indexes:
author, author's affiliation (university or company), keywords from the
abstract and title, subject terms and source title (journal or conference
title). Compendex is part of the Engineering Village. This service also
provides specialized indexing of the Internet, a technical standards
database, and a link to the U.S. Patent Database. Print copy in Sci Index
TA1.E6, 1884 - 1995.
Web
of Science. Coverage is 1900 to present. Online version
of Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts and
Humanities Citation Index. Citation searching provides one
method for bringing your list of references more up-to-date. Take your
most important known papers and use this index to determine if they have
been cited by more recent journal articles. They index over 8,500
journals but do not include technical reports, conference papers or
theses.
Academic
Search Premier. PARTIAL FULL TEXT DATABASE. Provides full text for over
3,200 scholarly publications covering academic areas of study including
social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering,
and mathematics. Good resource for a few basic articles on a topic. This database is designed for undergraduate research. For a more
comprehensive search, search Academic Search Premier, Business Source
Premier and Master File Premier at the same time. Select the Choose
Databases link in the EBSCO interface to select multiple databases.
ACS
Journal Archives. Full Text of all ACS journals from volume 1 up
until 5 years ago. Includes important titles: Biotechnology
Progress, Environmental Science and Technology, and Industrial and
Engineering Chemistry. Provides for locating a known citation or
searching by author, keywords or the full text of the articles.
Business
Source Premier. PARTIAL FULL TEXT DATABASE. Provides full text for over
3200 business and industry
journals. Coverage is back to the 1950's for some important
publications and contains detailed company profiles for the world's 5,000
largest companies.
Digital
Dissertations. Indexes
dissertations and theses written by graduates of North American and European
universities. The complete text of dissertations written at the University of
Maine after 1996 is included.
Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Provides access to the full text of over 1100 free scholarly
journals. Some journals are searchable at the article level. Also
provides access by broad subject areas.
Forest
Products Abstracts. Coverage from 1978 to present.. Index to all
aspects of the forest products literature including wood properties, timber
extraction and damage, composites and laminates, pulp industry, and
business issues. This databases is updated bi-monthly and indexes over 450
journals (see Serials cited
in Forest Products Abstracts). Print index located at: Sci
Index SD 430 F66.
Google
Scholar. Beta version, under construction. Indexes
scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books,
preprints, abstracts and technical reports. Google Scholar
includes articles from a variety of academic publishers, professional
societies, preprint repositories and universities. They rank results
based on their relevance criteria.
Health
and Safety Science Abstracts. Coverage is 1981 - present.
Provides
citations and abstracts to the literature on public health, safety, and
industrial hygiene. Draws on government reports as well as journal articles,
conference proceedings, books, and other publications. Major areas of
subject coverage include occupational safety and health, transportation,
environmental and ecology, food and drugs, pesticides, natural disasters,
toxicology, etc.
MasterFILE
Premier. PARTIAL FULL TEXT DATABASE. Provides full text for over 1,830 general
reference, business, consumer health, general science. Full text
extends back to January, 1990. Indexing and abstracts is
available for an additional 1,000 journals.
MInd: The Meetings Index. Provides a free databases of future national and international conferences, regional meetings, and short courses.
MSDS Search - National
Repository. FULL TEXT DATABASE. This site pulls together in one place a great many
sites containing material safety data sheets. Large list of
manufacturers is included.
Pollution
Abstracts. 1981 - present. Presented by Cambridge Scientific
Abstracts this resources covers air, water, land and noise pollution. Industry pollution problems and solutions are covered. Updated
monthly.
Science Accelerator, Office of Scientific and Technical Information, U.S. Department of Energy. Search collections of DOE research results, project descriptions, and accomplishments. These collections enable you to find out about ongoing research projects, explore significant DOE discoveries, learn about DOE Nobel Prize Winners, access and search scientific e-prints, locate science conference papers and proceedings, patents, and more.
Science.gov. Newimproved gateway to
U.S. government publications and web sites. 12 major science agencies are
collaborating on this project. They have recently added relevancy-ranked
order to the results of a search. It includes 30 databases and over 1700
web sites.
Science Citation Index. Paper copy at Sci Index
Q1.A1S36. Holdings are 1965 to present. An excellent multidisciplinary science information source which leads you
to papers that cite a paper of interest, thus resulting in records for articles
that you may not find using traditional subject or keyword searching. To learn how
to use it, ask a Science and Engineering Center librarian. Online
access is available through

ScienceDirect. FULL TEXT FOR UMAINE SUBSCRIBED JOURNAL TITLES ONLY (1800+). Online access to full text from 1995 for most titles. Sign up for automatic notification when new issues are published.
Scirus. produced by Elsevier. Use for searching instead of ScienceDirect
interface. Use this Advanced search which provides many options for
full text searching and across a variety of databases.
Virtual
Technical Reports Center. Maintained by the University of
Maryland Libraries. Links to institutions worldwide that provide full text
and indexing to their reports, dissertations, reprints and preprints.
Water
Resources Abstracts. Index to international
scientific literature on all aspects of water resource issues. Includes
abstracts of journal articles, monographs, technical reports, books, and
conference proceedings. Updated quarterly.
Coverage is 1967 to the present.
MInd: The Meetings Index. Provides a free databases of future national and international conferences, regional meetings, and short courses.
New York Times Article Archive. 1851− present. Full text of articles can be purchased online or use the microfilm collection in Fogler Library.
News
on the Web - Archive. Provides links to U.S. and international
newspaper archives that are searchable. Also has links to TV and radio
broadcast archives.
ProQuest
Newspapers. Full text of more than 500 U.S.
and international news sources. Includes The New York Times, Wall Street
Journal, Boston Globe, and the Times of London, plus hundreds of other news
sources and news wires. Years of coverage vary by title. Maine papers
included: Bangor Daily News (1992+), Portland Press Herald (1995+), and
selected business coverage from Maine Times (1994-2002) and Central Maine
Morning Sentinel (1993-1997).

Science. Online version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology and the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms. Includes over 8,500 online encyclopedia articles and 15,000 illustrations from the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, 10th Edition and regularly updated, fully-searchable media-rich content, terms, images and video.
Dictionary of Paper. (SciRef TS1085.A6) Non-technical definitions of terms
commonly used in the U.S. paper and allied industries. Important uses, summaries of
significant manufacturing history, and brief discussions of important properties are given
whenever possible. Many different types of mill products are described.
Handbook for Pulp & Paper Technologists. (SciRef TS1105.S674) Detailed
overview of the technology of pulp and paper manufacture. Extensively illustrated.
Handbook of Physical Testing of Paper. 2nd rev. ed. Ed. by R.
E. Mark. Dekker, 2002. (SciRef TS1109.H325 2002 2 vols.).
Handbook of Pulp and Paper Terminology. (SciRef TS1085.S66) A comprehensive
collection of technical and operational terms for pulping, papermaking and related
operations. Commonly used abbreviations and acronyms are included.
Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. 4th
ed. John Wiley, 1991. (SciRef TP9.E685 1991) Starting to receive the 5th ed. John Wiley,
2004. (SciRef TP0/K54 2004) Excellent resource for
students and researchers of all levels. Covers all areas of chemical
technology and articles are written by experts in the field. General scientific and technical articles are included.
Extensive bibliographies. May need to consult the 2nd and 3rd
editions for some topics in the ORO stacks.
NCASI Methods
Manual. Useful to companies involved in environmental monitoring,
mill research programs, and analysis of environmental samples.
NIOSH Pocket Guide to
Chemical Hazards. Contains physical and chemical properties and
exposure hazard information for several hundred chemicals that are common in
the work environment.
NIST Chemistry WebBook. Contains spectral, thermochemical, thermophysical and energetics data.
NIST Data Gateway. Covers a broad range of substances and properties from many different
scientific disciplines. U.S. National Institute of Standards and
Technology.
Pulping and Paper Production. Technical Information Papers (SciRef
Standards Collection TS1175.P8) Corrugated Containers& Packaging: Technical Information Papers. (SciRef Standards Collection TS1138.C6778) These two information sources include engineering data and "best practices"
prepared by technical committees of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper

forestiers = Productos forestales. FAO Yearbook, 2000. (SciRef HD9750.4.Y4 2000) Compilation of statistical data on basic
forest products in all countries including roundwood, wood chips, lumber,
wood-based panels, pulp and paper.
International Fact and Price Book. (SciRef HD9820.1.I58) An excellent
resource for economic analysis of the pulp and paper industry. Overviews production
and prices in each country. Profiles the top 150 companies.
Lockwood-Post's Directory of the Pulp, Paper and Allied
Trades. (SciRef TS1088.L822 2003) Similar to Phillips International Paper Directory, but with a North
American focus and more descriptive information at the mill level.

RISI. Contains a wide variety of information on companies, mills, news,
technology, careers, etc. Also contains dictionary, encyclopedia

Phillips International Paper Directory. (SciRef TS 1088. P52) Lists
worldwide mills, paper and paper products, merchants, distributors, trade associations,
and sources of equipment and supplies.
Piranet.com. PIRA International is an international consulting organization for the
packaging and paper industry.
Pulp and Paper Canada Annual and Directory. 2003 ed. Information on companies and plants. Contains schematics for the
production process at each plant. (SciRef TK1088.P85 2003)
Pulp and Paper Company Profiles. (SciRef TS1088.P75) Overviews the financial and business structure of the top North American companies in
pulp, paper, and paperboard.
Pulp and Paper North American Factbook. (SciRef TS1088.P86) A
yearbook which provides an overview of the state of the industry in North America and
Mexico. Provides detailed statistical analysis of prices, capacities, production,
and consumption of various pulp, paper, and paperboard grades.
NSSN. National Standards Systems Network. Searchable bibliographic database of
thousands of industrial standards and specifications and links to many
standards-issuing organizations.
American Society of Testing and
Materials. Annual Book of ASTM Standards. (SciRef TA401.A653 Standards shelves) Have 2000 edition complete. 2002 edition has started
to arrive. Older editions in ORO Stacks.

industry. Fogler Library is the home of the only Patent and
Trademark Depository Library in Maine. Services offered include the full-text of
United States patents, 1974-present, and free instruction on how to do a patent search on
a topic of interest. If you need to locate a copy of a specific patent, refer
to the Fogler Library Guide, "Locating Copies of
