Electronic Indexes & Databases

Use these databases to locate citations or full text for journal articles, conference papers, technical reports and theses. Once you have located relevant articles, search URSUS by journal or book title to determine if Fogler Library owns the item. We may own journals in print or online or both formats. Need to check the record listed as Serials (for print holdings) and E-Serials (for electronic holdings). Must click on the "Restricted Access UM" link to see the online holdings. If we do not own the item you need, consider requesting through Interlibrary Loan. Remember most of the articles listed in these databases cannot be located by using a regular web browser such as Google. These databases provide the means to locating scholarly research articles.

  • Compendex. Index to over 14 million journal article and conference proceeding abstracts across 190 engineering disciplines and from over 65 countries; updated weekly. Use their subject headings to obtain more precise results. Access is provided by the following indexes: author, author's affiliation (university or company), keywords from the abstract and title, subject terms and source title (journal or conference title). Compendex is part of the Engineering Village platform.
  • SciFinder Scholar. SciFinder Scholar is the expanded electronic version of Chemical Abstracts, covering literature (including patents) from the mid-1800s to present, plus additional databases listing chemical substances and reactions. Covers literature (including patents) on all branches of chemistry, as well as related fields. Search options include keyword, CAS Registry number, chemical structure, chemical reaction, and more. University of Maine (Orono) also has access to the the SciFinder Substructure Module (SSM), which permits searching a chemical substance database for substitutions, variations in ring structure, and R groups, as well as the option to search by stereochemistry.
  • TAPPI e-Library. Provides unlimited access to over 20,000 documents from 1990 to the present including conference proceedings, technical papers, TAPPI Journal articles, Paper360º articles, archived Solutions! articles, and more. The TAPPI e-Library covers every area of the pulp and paper industry and is a powerful resource for keeping up with industry developments, researching solutions to problems and challenges, learning about leading edge technologies and business strategies.
  • Academic Search Complete. Academic Search Complete is a large scholarly, multi-disciplinary, full-text database, with more than 7,400 full-text periodicals, including more than 6,300 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to full text, this database offers indexing and abstracts for more than 11,500 scholarly, popular, trade, and special interest serials, and a total of more than 12,000 publications including monographs, reports, conference proceedings, and more. Updated daily. 
  • Business Source Complete. Business Source Complete indexes and abstracts more than 4,800 scholarly, trade, popular, and special interest serials in the fields of business and industry. More than half of the publications are peer- reviewed, and approximately 3,700 provide full text. Additional full-text, non-journal content includes financial data, books, monographs, major reference works, conference proceedings, case studies, investment research reports, industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, SWOT analyses, faculty seminars (videos), and more. Updated daily.
  • CAB Direct. CAB Direct covers research and development literature in the fields of agriculture, forestry, human health, human nutrition, animal health and the management and conservation of natural resources. Can be searched by author, title, abstract word, and CAB descriptor. Indexes journals as well as books, reports, and conference proceedings. Updated weekly.
  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Provides full-text articles from over 1145 free peer-reviewed journals covering all scholarly and scientific subjects. Over 310 journals can be searched by article title. Most articles are in English. Records for articles in foreign languages have English abstracts.
  • Electronic Journals: Full Text. Searchable database of journals and journal articles available through EBSCO Subscription Services, including access to many full text articles. In ARTICLESearch, articles can be searched by keyword in title, abstract or full text. JOURNALSearch provides access at the journal title level, and can be searched by keyword, ISSN, or publisher. Journal table of contents may also be browsed. Links to the full text of articles are available for e-journals to which Fogler Library subscribes, or when the article appears in a sample issue.
  • Environment Complete. Environment Complete offers deep coverage in applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, renewable energy sources, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more. The database contains full text for more than 400 journals, including many of the most-used journals in the discipline, such as Environment (back to 1975), Ecologist, Conservation Biology, etc. It also has full text for more than 100 monographs, such as Encyclopedia of World Environmental History (3 volumes), Advances in Water Treatment & Environmental Management, and more.
  • Environmental Science Collection (Proquest). Provides access to the electronic versions of several standard indexes: Agricultural & nvironmental biotechnology abstracts (1993-present); AFSA Aquatic pollution & environmental quality (1990-present); Ecology abstracts (1982-present); EIS Digests of environmental impact statements (1985-present); Environmental engineering abstracts (1990-present); Health & safety sciences abstracts (1981-present); Industrial & applied microbiology abstracts (Microbiology A) (1982-present); Bacteriology abstracts (Microbiology B) (1982-present); Pollution abstracts (1981-present); Risk abstracts (1990-present); Toxicology abstracts (1981-present); Water resources abstracts (1967-present).
  • Google Scholar. Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: articles, theses, books, abstracts and court opinions, from academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories, universities and other web sites. Google Scholar helps you find relevant work across the world of scholarly research. Personal iGoogle Scholar configurations may not be available when accessing library licensed resources. Access to library licensed resources may require logging out of personal iGoogle account.
  • ScienceDirect. ScienceDirect is a full-text collection of journals on science, technology, and medicine published by Elsevier. The University of Maine System Libraries have access to Complete and the Freedom Collection, which together comprise more than 1,800 journals, most with backfiles from 1995 to present. There are some ScienceDirect journal titles to which University users do not have access. Elsevier provides lists of titles included and excluded from the Freedom Collection at http://www.info.sciencedirect.com/licensing/additional/freedom/
  • Web of Science. Provides access to the Science Citation Index® (1900 to present), Social Sciences Citation Index® (1956-present), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index™ (1975-present). Covers current and retrospective multidisciplinary information from approximately 8,500 of the most prestigious, high impact research journals in the world. Provides cited reference searching, with which users can navigate forward, backward, and through the literature, searching all disciplines to uncover information relevant to their research.

  • Chemical Abstracts. (Sci Index QD7.C44) Online access now available through SciFinder Scholar,1907 to present. Software needs to be loaded on your computer to utilize SciFinder Scholar. We have a contract for just one user at a time but the service is available almost 24/7. This is the major indexing source for the worldwide chemical literature. Published by the American Chemical Society. Approximately 14,000 journals are monitored, plus patents, conference proceedings, and other types of literature.
  • Engineering Index. Print copy in Sci Index TA1.E6, 1884 - 1995.
  • Science Citation Index. Print copy at Sci Index Q1.A1S36. Holdings are 1965 to present. An excellent multidisciplinary science information source which leads you to papers that cite a paper of interest, thus resulting in records for articles that you may not find using traditional subject or keyword searching. To learn how to use it, ask a Science and Engineering Center librarian. Online access is available through Web of Science. Coverage is 1900 to present.

  • TAPPI Journal. Online access for UMaine. Indexed in Compendex.
  • American Chemical Society Publications. Provides full-text access to 120 years of chemistry research published in American Chemical Society journals from 1879. The database access is rolling in nature; that is, every year, a new year's worth of content will be added. Access to the Archives includes articles from the year of first issue for all journals up to five years ago. Also provides access to the monographs in the ACS Symposium Series from 2010 to present.
  • Paper 360. Online access for UMaine. Indexed in Business Source Complete.
  • Paper Industry Magazine. Includes industry news, product and service reviews, and in-depth editorial on important issues in the pulp and paper industry
  • PaperAge Magazine. Freely downloadable paper industry trade magazine. Current issue available on home page. Back issues available in the archive.

  • Access Science. Online version of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology and the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms. Includes over 8,500 online encyclopedia articles and 15,000 illustrations from the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, 10th Edition and regularly updated, fully-searchable media-rich content, terms, images and video.
  • Credo Reference (online). Over 3.2 million entries from more than 450 encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, guides, and atlases in all fields.
  • Dictionary of Paper. (SciRef TS1085.A6) Non-technical definitions of terms commonly used in the U.S. paper and allied industries. Important uses, summaries of significant manufacturing history, and brief discussions of important properties are given whenever possible. Many different types of mill products are described.
  • Handbook of Pulp and Paper Terminology. (SciRef TS1085.S66) A comprehensive collection of technical and operational terms for pulping, papermaking and related operations. Commonly used abbreviations and acronyms are included.
  • IUPAC Gold Book: the IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology.
  • Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology. 4th ed. John Wiley, 1991. (SciRef TP9.E685 1991) Starting to receive the 5th ed. John Wiley, 2004. (SciRef TP0/K54 2004) Excellent resource for students and researchers of all levels. Covers all areas of chemical technology and articles are written by experts in the field. General scientific and technical articles are included. Extensive bibliographies. May need to consult the 2nd and 3rd editions for some topics in the ORO stacks.
  • RISI. Contains a wide variety of information on companies, mills, news, technology, careers, etc. Also contains dictionary, encyclopedia and online trade magazine index. You may register for Gold Member status free for 60 days which provides additional resources. Fogler does not have a subscription.
  • Pulp and Paper Dictionary. Contains the definitions of terms, words and/or phrases commonly used in pulp and papermaking, printing, converting and paper trading.
  • Pulp and Paper North American Factbook. (SciRef TS1088.P86) A yearbook which provides an overview of the state of the industry in North America and Mexico. Provides detailed statistical analysis of prices, capacities, production, and consumption of various pulp, paper, and paperboard grades.

  • NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards. Contains physical and chemical properties and exposure hazard information for several hundred chemicals that are common in the work environment.
  • NIST Chemistry WebBook. Contains spectral, thermochemical, thermophysical and energetics data. Search chemicals by name, formula, structure, IUPAC identifier, CAS registry number, or reaction.

Patents

Patents are a valuable source of information on processes and products in the chemical industry. Fogler Library is the home of the only Patent and Trademark Resource Center in Maine. Services offered include the full-text of United States patents, 1974-present, and free instruction on how to do a patent search on a topic of interest. If you need to locate a copy of a specific patent, refer to the Fogler Library Guide, "Locating Copies of Patents. "

Theses & Dissertations

  • Digital Dissertations. Indexes dissertations and theses written by graduates of North American and European universities. The complete text of dissertations written at the University of Maine after 1996 is included.

Conference Papers & Proceedings

Technical Reports

  • Chemical Data Access Tool (CDAT). Use CDAT to find health and safety information submitted to EPA under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), including a broad range of health and safety information reported by industry under TSCA Sections 4,5, 8(d), and 8(e), unpublished, nonconfidential studies covering chemical testing results and adverse effects of chemicals on health and ecological systems, health and environmental effects information obtained through the High Production Volume (HPV) Challenge, and recently declassified confidential business information.
  • National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, Inc. (NCASI) Publications Search. Includes research reports, newletters, and various handbooks.
  • Science Accelerator, Office of Scientific and Technical Information, U.S. Department of Energy. Search collections of DOE research results, project descriptions, and accomplishments. These collections enable you to find out about ongoing research projects, explore significant DOE discoveries, learn about DOE Nobel Prize Winners, access and search scientific e-prints, locate science conference papers and proceedings, patents, and more.
  • Science.gov 5.0. A free, integrated single-search gateway to reliable science and technology information from 17 organizations within 13 federal science agencies - access to over 200 million pages of scientific information.
  • SciTech Connect. Formerly two separate databases: Energy Citations Database and DOE Information Bridge. Coverage is 1948 - Present. Contains bibliographic records and many full texts for energy and energy-related scientific and technical reports and papers sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessor agencies. It provides coverage of traditional and alternative forms of energy production and conservation. Many aspects of electrical engineering and applied physics are covered including fission and fusion.
  • Virtual Technical Reports Center. Maintained by the University of Maryland Libraries. Links to institutions worldwide that provide full text and indexing to their reports, dissertations, reprints and preprints.

Chemical Substance & Structure Databases

  • SciFinder Scholar. SciFinder Scholar is the expanded electronic version of Chemical Abstracts, covering literature (including patents) from the mid-1800s to present, plus additional databases listing chemical substances and reactions. Covers literature (including patents) on all branches of chemistry, as well as related fields. Search options include keyword, CAS Registry number, chemical structure, chemical reaction, and more.   • Cambridge Structural Database. The Cambridge Structural Database includes bibliographic, chemical and crystallographic (X-ray and neutron diffraction analysis) information on organic molecules and organometallic compounds. Includes data from published literature and from private reports. Available versions are WebCSD (Internet, unlimited users) or via installed client software (limited to a single user).
  • IUPAC Gold Book: the IUPAC Compendium of Chemical Terminology.

  • Center for Paper Business and Industry Studies.
  • Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPA). They issue statisitcal reports for European industry.
  • Current Index to Statistics. Current Index to Statistics is a bibliographic index to publications in statistics, probability, and related fields. CIS indexes over 160 core journals; selected articles with statistical content from about 1200 additional journals; and more than 11,000 books in statistics. Published by the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
  • Forest Products = Produits forestiers = Productos forestales. FAO Yearbook, 2000. (SciRef HD9750.4.Y4 2000) Compilation of statistical data on basic forest products in all countries including roundwood, wood chips, lumber, wood-based panels, pulp and paper.
  • Global Pulp & Paper Fact & Price Book 2006. RISI. (SciRef HD9824.1.P85 2006). Provides market data, key statistics and grade overviews for all major grades of pulp and paper.
