Adobe Suite Training

Ps-i. Introduction to Photoshop
Tues., 21 Oct., 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
This workshop provides an introduction and overview of Adobe Photoshop with a focus on basic photographic editing techniques. No prior knowledge of Photoshop is required.

Ps-d. Photoshop 2: Photoshop as a design tool
Tues., 28 Oct., 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
This class moves beyond simple photo editing. Participants will learn to work with layers and selections as they create composite images and original artwork. Prerequisite: Intro to Photoshop or equivalent experience.

Id1. Introduction to InDesign
Thurs., 23 Oct., 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
InDesign is an industry standard desktop publishing application and is part of the Adobe Creative Suite that also includes Photoshop and Illustrator. InDesign is the perfect solution for all your print publication needs and a great choice for research papers and dissertations. This workshop introduces the program and provides an overview of the essential features.

Id2. InDesign 2: Beyond the basics
Thurs., 30 Oct., 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
This workshop uses the basic skills from the Intro to InDesign workshop as a starting point for exploring the application’s more advanced tools. Topics include: import options, creating outlines, type on a path, footnotes, tables, and setting up a book file. Participants will also learn how to work with Adobe Bridge, the organizational tool and file browser that is part of Adobe Creative Suite. Prerequisite: Intro to InDesign or equivalent experience.

Web Authoring

Ex. Microsoft Expression Web
Wed., 29 Oct., 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
This workshop is an introduction to Expression, Microsoft’s new web authoring tool. Topics will include: setting up a web site, page layout, creating hyperlinks, adding images, and using tables.
No prior knowledge of Expression is required. Note: Expression is a PC only application.

Dw. Introduction to Dreamweaver CS3
Wed., 5 Nov., 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Dreamweaver is a sophisticated HTML editor and web-authoring tool. It offers easy to use visual editing features and customization options. This class is an introduction to the CS3 version. No prior knowledge of Dreamweaver is required. Class will be taught using overhead projection screen only. Participants will need to bring a laptop with Dreamweaver CS3 Installed and battery charged in order to complete hands on portion of the class. Instructor will contact registrants with further details.

Tues., 9 Sep., 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Review resources used to develop and maintain business and marketing plans. Find out where to locate sample business plans, demographic data, industry overviews, and more. Tools covered include free Internet sites, library business databases such as Business & Company Resource Center, and print resources.

En1. Endnote-Beginners
Instructor: Cynthia Crosser, Social Science and Humanities Reference
Mon., 20 Oct., 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Attend a free 90-minute workshop on using the bibliographic management tool EndNote. No experience is necessary. Learn the basics of creating a library and using a template. Limited to 10 classroom computers. You may also bring your own laptop with EndNote installed. Please let us know if you are bringing your laptop.

En2. Endnote-Advanced

Mon., 27 Oct., 9:00 - 10:30 a.m.
Attend a free 90-minute workshop on using the bibliographic management tool EndNote. This class is for users who have some experience and wish to learn advanced techniques. Limited to 10 classroom computers. You may also bring your own laptop with EndNote installed. Please let us know if you are bringing your laptop. You may request topics to be covered.

Sci. Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports
Instructors: Jim Bird, Science and Engineering Center Librarian and Cynthia Crosser, Social Science and Humanities Reference
Tues., 21 Oct., 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Instructors will discuss how to effectively search Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports. Using Web of Science users can search the abstracts of over 6,000 journals in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, often linking to the full-text of the paper through Fogler Library’s electronic journal collection. Cited reference searching and advanced searching techniques will also be discussed. Journal Citations Reports allows users to determine the ISI ranking of journals by individual title or subject. Use this database to determine a journal’s ISI impact factor and ranking within a field. Participants will have the opportunity for hands-on experience using both databases.

Cm1. GIS for Everybody- The Introduction
01. Wed., 22 Oct., 8:00 - 11:00 a.m. or
02. Wed., 19 Nov., 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. (Offered twice, choose one session)
Learn how to map the spatial distribution of your data with ArcView 3.3 software, and how to print customized maps from the DeLorme Topo USA 5.0 program. Hands-on, with option to also schedule time on the Library's GeoStats computer.

Cm2. GIS for Businesspeople
Thurs., 30 Oct., 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Distribution of potential customers, their buying power and presence /absence of competitors might be difficult to interpret from raw statistics, but can often be seen quickly when mapped out. Learn how to map the spatial distribution of demographic, economic and commercial data with ArcView 3.3 software. Workshop covers basic terminology, characteristics of formats, selected hardware and software. Includes demonstrations, and some hands-on experience, with option to also schedule time on the Library's GeoStats computer.

Cm3. Basics of Using a GPS Receiver
Mon., 3 Nov, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
What is the Global Positioning System (GPS)? How does one operate a GPS receiver? Workshop covers: basic terminology, selected hardware and software, how to download the resulting file, suggestions for overlaying your data onto a topographic map layer or aerial photo, and hands-on experience. Portions of this class held outdoors, so come prepared for the weather.

Cm4. Adding your GPS Layer to a Digital Base Map
Thurs., 13 Nov., 4:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Various kinds of data may be added as layers (also known as themes) in a spatial display. If you have gathered spatial data with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and have downloaded the resulting file, and want to explore how to overlay your data onto a topographic map layer or aerial photos, come to this workshop. No instruction offered in this workshop on how to operate a GPS receiver (See Cm3).

Cm5. GIS Immersion Workshop - $25 ($10 for students)
Workshop will be held ONCE on EITHER:
Sat., 8 Nov., 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. or Mon., 10 Nov, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The date that accommodates the most people will be chosen.
Register with Karen Stewart (karen.stewart@umit.maine.edu) and indicate your availability. All registrants will be notified of the date chosen.
For those who cannot take the individual weekday workshops one at a time, here’s the whole shebang in a single day. An introduction to computer mapping, ArcView 3.3 software, important applications and techniques, and strategies on how to find ready-made numeric data tables and maps in digital form. Fee includes 70-page workbook and CD-ROM of files associated with workshop exercises.
