1. NEWS
A. SEARCH MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS ONLINE
Researchers may now search a selection of finding aids for manuscripts using
Fogler Library’s search engine at
http://www.library.umaine.edu/speccoll/portaldb/search.htm. Access to
finding aids is essential for understanding the true content of manuscript
collections, such as personal papers, business records, and photographs, because
the finding aid is a detailed narrative description and inventory of the
material. This new tool allows keyword searching across finding aids for 115
collections with more being added continually. The bulk of these collections
were part of a project, funded by a grant from the National Historic
Publications and Records Commission, to process nearly 100 collections related
to Maine's environmental history.
Information about manuscript collections is also available through: records in
URSUS; onsite finding aids in Special Collections on the third floor of Fogler
Library; and a browsable list at
http://www.library.umaine.edu/speccoll/manulist.htm Contact Special
Collections staff at (207) 581-1686 or
spc@umit.maine.edu for further information.
2. DATABASES
