1. ANNOUNCEMENT
A. INVITATION TO "TASTING CHINA"
Faculty and friends are invited to join us for "Tasting China: an evening
of Chinese cuisine and culture" Wednesday, October 29, 2003, 5 - 7 p.m. in
the The Thomas Lynch University Club, Fogler Library. Guests will have the
opportunity to learn about Chinese cuisine and culture as they enjoy a special
eight-course traditional Chinese dinner prepared by member's of UMaine's Chinese
community. Cost is $20 per person. R.s.v.p. by October 10, 2003. For more

2. DATABASES
A. NEW DATABASE: FACTS.COM
Fogler Library now has access to FACTS.com via the the Indexes & Databases
list (http://www.library.umaine.edu/indexesdb/indexes.asp).
FACTS.com is a reference tool that has a searchable database of news briefs from
1940 to the present. It includes articles on people and events from world and
U.S. politics, arts and sciences, labor, finance and economics, awards and
prizes, and more. For assistance in searching FACTS.com, please contact Nancy

B. ArcCANADA SPATIAL AND NUMERIC DATA
Newly arrived at the Library is ArcCanada, a set of 4 CD-ROMs of Canadian
spatial data in several cartographic and thematic layers, at continental (scale
1:3M), national (1:1.5M), provincial (1:1M) levels. The national level includes:
the Land Potential Database (soil, climate, and agricultural productivity),
ecological zones and regions, climate, vegetation, earthquakes and fault lines.
The national and provincial files each include: water bodies, cities, roads,
national parks, soils, land cover, political boundaries, utility lines, urban
areas, Census Division and Subdivision boundaries, and Federal Electoral
Districts. The set also includes socio-economic data, results from the 1997
federal election, and raster and vector digital elevation models.
