1. NEWS
A. ENCOMPASS FEDERATED SEARCHING AND LINKFINDER
Fogler Library staff are implementing a search service that will be ready
for your use by Fall 2003. Federated searching allows users to perform
searches across multiple sources without repeating the search in multiple
databases. One search will return results from URSUS, online databases, and
other online collections. This eliminates the need to know the different
procedures and formats required by the individual databases. LinkFinder
facilitates comprehensive linking for all library electronic content
including e-journals and full text articles available through our licensed
databases.

B. SAVINGS REALIZED BY USING NEW PHAROS PRINT SYSTEM
Last September the computer clusters at Fogler Library and the College of
Natural Resources, Forestry, and Agriculture were modified to implement a
new printing system for the public access computers, allowing faculty/staff
members and students to pay for printing using a Maine Card. All users
begin each semester with a balance of $16.00 on their MaineCard designated
for printing purposes. If the $16.00 is depleted prior to the end of the
semester, the system will automatically draw from whatever campus funds are
available on the MaineCard. If no campus funds are available, the job is
denied.

A cost analysis to date was done at Fogler Library and the savings were
really impressive. The library realized a 50% reduction in paper usage for
its public printers. At the same time, the Library replaced four smaller
printers with two larger, faster and more economical printers. The
reduction of wasted printing and corresponding change of printers resulted
in a four-fold reduction in money spent on toner compared to the same
period last year.

2. DATABASES
A. NEW DATABASE: INSPEC
INSPEC, produced by Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK), provides
worldwide coverage of the research literature for physics, electrical
engineering, electronics, computer hardware and software, control
engineering and information technology. Coverage is provided from 1969 to
the present for 3,500 technical and scientific journals and 1,500 conference
proceedings per year, updated weekly. When choosing INSPEC from the Indexes
and Databases page (http://www.library.umaine.edu/indexesdb/indexes.asp) you
will be connected to Engineering Village 2. The default database is
Compendex. Use the pull-down box to choose INSPEC. For many subject areas,
especially materials science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, surface
science, sensors and agents it would be advantageous to choose the option
"Combined Compendex and INSPEC".

You may establish a personal account in order to save search strategies and
have weekly updates sent via email of new references matching your research
interests. Contact the Science and Engineering Center: Jim Bird,
