B. LIBRARY SELECTED FOR NATIONAL LEADERSHIP GRANT
Thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS), Fogler Library will receive an award of $344,270 for the
2002 National Leadership Grant, in the Preservation and Digitization
category.
In this two-year project, "The Maine Music Box," the University of Maine,
in partnership with the Bagaduce Music Lending Library and the Bangor Public
Library, will design and implement an interactive, multimedia digital music
library (images of scores with associated sound renditions, cover art, and
lyrics). Users will be able to view, play and print scores, and manipulate
music by changing the key and instrument. The project will be linked to
statewide public school music curriculum standards. It will deliver an
instructional tool that advances the development and use of digital
libraries, and enriches the experience of music educators and students.
IMLS is a federal grant making agency located in Washington DC that fosters
leadership, innovation and a lifetime of learning by supporting museums and
libraries. For further information contact Marilyn Lutz

2. COLLECTIONS
A. The Papers of Margaret Sanger
Fogler Library has recently acquired a microfilm collection of the Papers
of Margaret Sanger (Microfilm Sa58), funded by a bequest from the estate of
Katharine O'Brien. These 145 reels of microfilm are accompanied by a print
guide, Margaret Sanger: a Register of Her Papers in the Library of Congress
(Microfilm HQ 764 .S3 A34). The papers cover the time period from 1900-1966,
with most of the material dated from 1928-1940.
The collection focuses on Sanger's extensive activities on behalf of
birth control in the United States and throughout the world. They include
correspondence, diaries, articles, speeches, lectures, clippings,
scrapbooks, photographs and memorabilia. This collection could provide
valuable primary source material for faculty and students in Communication,
History, Human Development, Social Work, Sociology, Nursing, and Women's
Studies.

3. SERVICES
A. INTERLIBRARY LOAN TOOLS -- URSUS, MAINE INFONET, AND OCLC
Fogler Library participates in three library networks from which we may
borrow books that are unavailable at Fogler: URSUS, Maine Info Net, and the
OCLC Interlibrary Loan network. You can order books from URSUS or Info Net
system libraries yourself. When a book is unavailable from both URSUS and
Info Net, then you can place a request through the Interlibrary Loan office.
URSUS is the shared library catalog of the UMaine system libraries, Bangor
Public, Maine State library, and the Maine State Law and Legislative
library. If a book is available at an URSUS library, click the REQUEST
button at the top of the URSUS screen, and follow the directions (i.e. type
in your name, MaineCard barcode number, and pickup location). You will
receive notice to pick up your URSUS books at the Reserve Circulation desk.
For more information about Interlibrary Loan services at UMaine, come see
us on the first floor of Fogler Library, call 581-1671, or see our web page
http://www.library.umaine.edu/ill/. Check out next week's newsletter for
descriptions of how to order books that are not held in URSUS system
libraries from Info Net via on-screen commands, or OCLC via our Interlibrary
Loan service.
