3. DIGITAL LIBRARY INITIATIVES

A. MAINE CENSUS POPULATION TOTALS 1790-2000
A numeric database of population totals for Maine counties and minor civil
divisions (Or MCDs, i.e. cities and towns) from all U.S. Censuses 1790 to
2000 has been compiled and put online by the Fogler Library at
http://www.library.umaine.edu/census/ . The site includes five search
methods: Master List of Towns, County/Year Search, Town/Year Search,
Threshold Search, and Trend Search. Since the database is historically
complete, there are 1,495 unique MCD names. Of these, 530 MCDs represent
those existing currently, as represented in the year 2000 data. The site
includes general information about the database, answers to frequently asked
questions (FAQ), a bibliography of sources for historical town name and
boundary information, some maps and web links to pertinent information.
