1. COLLECTIONS
A. LEARNING MATERIAL CENTER ANNOUNCES NEW ACQUISITIONS
The Learning Materials Center (LMC), located on Fogler Library's second
floor, supports the University's education curriculum with a collection of high
quality educational materials for use with children from preschool through grade
twelve. This month the LMC announces the acquisition of 52 new resources in the
following categories: Picture Books, Juvenile Fiction, Juvenile Non-Fiction,
Teen Fiction, Periodicals, Resource File Material, and Reference Material (Adult
Reference To Teach Children). To see a complete list for this and prior months
please go to library.umaine.edu/lmc/newarrivals.htm.
Assistance in the LMC is available on questions like: identifying children's
books on a particular topic, searching specific genres in children literature,
and viewing bibliographies or award winning book lists. Please contact Dottie
McKenney, Library Assistant II (dottie.mckenney@umit.maine.edu) (207-581-1608)
at the Learning Materials Center or Cynthia Crosser, Education Librarian
(207-581-3612) (cynthia.crosser@umit.maine.edu)
in Reference.
B. THE HEALTH EDUCAITON RESOURCE COLLECTION (HERC)
A reminder about another significant library service, the Health Education
Resource Collection (HERC). Orders may be placed from the HERC Web page:
www.library.umaine.edu/herc/
. Paul Markson (paul.markson@umit.maine.edu)
(207-581-1685) is the Library Assistant for this collection. His hours are
Monday - Friday 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The catalog for these materials is
available online at the same website.
2. DATABASES
A. JSTOR OFFERS PREVIEW OF REVISED SITE
The new interface for the JSTOR database is nearing completion. It will look
a bit different, and will offer more tools and capabilities for users. JSTOR
also announced that several projects are also underway to introduce monographs,
manuscripts, and pamphlets into the archive – a very new direction for them as,
to date they concentrated on offering the journal literature only.
They anticipate a launch in mid-March. Faculty are invited to explore a
preview of the new site nicknamed “JSTOR Sandbox” at sandbox.jstor.org. They are
anxious to get advance feedback from you on the new JSTOR interface and the
functionality offered. Other information available at the prototype site
include: instructions for sending them your comments, and news on support and
plans for training via webinars, tutorials, handouts, and prepared screen shots.
The contact listed in connection with the Sandbox prototype is Sherry
Aschenbrenner, Director, JSTOR User Services, email
support@jstor.org.
