1. COLLECTIONS
A. PATENT AND TRADEMARK DEPOSITORY LIBRARY PROGRAM
Patents are often an overlooked source of scientific, engineering, historical and genealogical information. Fogler Library has been designated as the Patent and Trademark Depository Library for the State of Maine since 1993, with the responsibility of assisting Maine residents to research or apply for U.S. patents and trademarks. We make available computer and print resources to accomplish this mission.
Online patent searching is available for 1976 to present (www.uspto.gov), searchable by keyword, inventor, assignee, classification code, etc. Pre-1976 patent searches also available online using patent number or the Patent Classification System. The Science and Engineering Center has a computer workstation provided by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for searching of the patent and trademark databases.
This also provides efficient access to view and to print the entire full-text of the patent with one print command. We also own current guidebooks on patent laws, examination procedures, inventor guidelines, the application process and marketing methods. These are located in the Science and Engineering Center near the patent and trademark workstation. A. LIBRARY WEB PAGE FOR UMAINE FACULTY
Expressly for the faculty, the Library maintains a web page with links to internal and external services and information that we hope will be useful to you and save you time. Please make it your home page and add to your favorites/bookmarks list for quick access to the Library links you need daily, library.umaine.edu/govdoc/forfaculty.htm.
You will find news items, for example: new books on order; links to the current and archived copies of Library's online and print newsletters; and the status of any Library project requiring faculty input. There are interactive Library forms for campus delivery of journal articles and books held here at Fogler Library, as well as for placing materials on Reserve -- either as hard-copy or in electronic format -- for your courses.
Without leaving one's office, a faculty member can also: request interlibrary loan of a book or photocopies of journal articles that are not held here at the University of Maine, and request reference assistance via e-mail or the Web. Supporting communication with the library staff are: a list of the faculty liaison librarian for each department, information about requesting a bibliographic instruction session for your class, and examples of course guides created for these sessions.
