1. What is ILLiad?

ILLiad is our new ILL system.  For a brief overview, see the ILLiad FAQ.

2. Who can use Fogler Library's Interlibrary Loan Service?

University of Maine(Orono) faculty, staff and registered students, as well as corporate/research card holders, are eligible to use Interlibrary Loan services. All other users, including Courtesy card holders, should use the ILL services of their local public or school library.

3. How Much Will It Cost ?

Fogler Library holds reciprocal agreements with many libraries and makes every attempt to procure items at no or minimal cost to the user.  Most of the articles we receive are free.  When we cannot obtain items from a reciprocal library, some costs will be passed on to the user. Fogler Library will not pass on charges more than those authorized on your request.

There are usually no charges for loans.

4. How Long Will It Take ?

In most cases, staff order item(s) from lending libraries within 1 working day of receiving patron requests. The turnaround time for an item ordered on ILL depends largely upon the location of the lending library, and the accuracy of the information you have supplied on your request form.  Items obtained within Maine usually take approximately 1 week to arrive. Items obtained from outside of Maine and/or New England may take longer. You will be notified if it is not possible to fill a request by the date specified as "not useful after."  Please do not list a date that is less than two weeks from the date of your request and please wait at least two weeks after submitting a request before checking on its status.

5. How do I submit a request?

ILL requests may be submitted in person or via the web. To order materials electronically, you must create an ILLiad user account.  For details go to the ILLiad FAQ.

Please check URSUS and Maine Infonet holdings  before submitting ILL requests.  Please fill out forms completely* so that staff can fill your requests as quickly as possible.

*Include a complete citation and request only one item (book or photocopy) per request form. Include your complete address. Be sure to limit your cost. No limit means you are willing to pay any amount.

6. What items cannot be requested through Interlibrary Loan?

ILL cannot request articles from journals that are held in Fogler Library. Articles in journals held by Fogler Library will not be requested unless the Circulation Department staff have determined that the issue is missing, or if Ursus indicates the volume/issue is at the bindery and will not be available within the next week.  ILL will not request books held by another Ursus or Maine Infonet library.  For those items use the request function. Likewise, ILL does not initiate requests for materials which are checked out to another user. You may ask circulation staff to issue a recall for such items, and/or place a hold on the item for you.

Videos, audio cassettes, and genealogy usually do not circulate.  You may borrow dissertations through Interlibrary Loan as long as there is a library willing to lend it.  Most dissertations can be purchased from University Microfilms.

7. How will I receive my interlibrary loan material?

ILL staff notify patrons by email when loans and photocopies are ready for pick-up at the main Circulation desk.  If you have indicated that you would prefer electronic delivery on your ILLiad account, your articles will be emailed to you, as long as we receive them from the lending library in electronic form.  Items on the hold shelf will be shelved under your last name.  If you have a campus address, photocopies will be mailed directly to the address you supplied on your request form.

8. How long can I keep my loan?

Most loans can be kept for three weeks from the time the book is received by the ILL Department.  Graduate students and faculty do not get semester loans for interlibrary loan books.  Loan periods are set by the lending libraries. Most books can be renewed for two weeks.  Please request renewals a few days before the item is due.  Books are renewed through your ILLiad account or by calling the ILL Department at 581-1671.  If you call, we will need the ILLiad transaction number.

Interlibrary loan books are not listed in your circulation record.  Your ILLiad record is your record of all books and photocopies you have requested through Interlibrary Loan.  Please return interlibrary loan books in the Circulation Department book drop, and to be sure your book makes its way safely to the interlibrary loan department, be sure to leave the interlibrary loan book slip in the book
