Numeric
databases are organized bodies of quantitative information, for example economic time series,
opinion surveys, election results
and Census figures. The term "database" has come to imply
"computerized" but strictly speaking, they may exist in several forms, including online
databases on the World Wide Web, online on a Local Area Network (LAN),
paper documents or cards, microform, floppy disks, and CD-ROM and DVD formats.
However the term "spatial databases" evolved during the computer era and almost always implies digitized information about the location and shape of, and relationships among, geographic features. Usually these are "georeferenced", i.e. stored with information identifying coordinates in space. The topological information (which generates the representation of altitude, distance, direction, shape, etc. and may represent points, lines, arcs and polygons), is usually stored as formulas, to be used by the appropriate Geographic Information System (GIS) software to create the desired map or plot.
