In-House Research Guide:
Ingenta

What is Ingenta?

Ingenta (from the Latin "ingens", meaning "vast") is an index to the tables of contents of 27,000 periodicals published since 1988 (formerly UnCover) and to full text articles from over 5,400 periodicals and other publications.  At some time these two databases will be integrated, but for the present you must search them separately.

Getting Started

Connect to Ingenta.  At the "Welcome to Ingenta" screen choose either "online articles" or "uncover plus".

Note that the two parts of the database cover different journals, and you may need to search or browse in both "online articles" and in "uncover plus".  This is most easily dome by clicking on the tab at the top of the "search results" list.

Searching for Articles

"Quick Search" only searches your keyword(s) from the Title, Keywords and Abstract.

For advanced searching click on "Search Options".  In this mode you can search by:

Your "current search history" (near the bottom of the screen) will show what search terms you have already used.  You can reuse these terms or edit them but you cannot combine them with Boolean operators using set numbers.

There is no subject searching in Ingenta, only keyword.

Searching for an author - Use advanced searching, and in the author box type in the author's surname, a comma, a space, and the first or all initials.  Do not type periods between the initials.  Do not type personal names in full.  Any punctuation in names, such as apostrophes or hyphens, must be included.

Truncation - Use an asterisk (*) to truncate a name, title, or word to be searched.

Exact phrase - Enclose the phrase in quotes, e.g. "House of Representatives"

To find more citations - Repeat the search in the database not searched (i.e. "uncover plus" or "online articles") by clicking on the tab at the top of the list of citations.

Search results - Citations are listed with the most recent first.  (Some may be listed before publication.) Click on "Summary" for an abstract.  To select several citations for printing, downloading, or e-mailing, click on "Mark".  To check the list of marked citations, click on "Marked List". From the Marked List you can only print/download/e-mail the citations.  To print multiple summaries or full text you must process each one separately.

Obtaining Cited Articles

Click on "Article Availability".  If an article is available online free of charge, click on "Display PDF", then print or save the article.  If the article is not available online, check URSUS for local holdings.  If the article is not available online and not listed in URSUS, it may be requested via Interlibrary Loan.  Articles may be available for purchase from Ingenta by individuals, but this is usually the most expensive option.

To Find a Known Article, or to Browse the Table of Contents

Click on "Browse Publications" to browse by:

Click on the desired title, then select either "Current Issue" or "All Issues".  After selecting the desired issue you will see the Table of Contents for that issue, showing the "article availability" icon.  Remember to browse again in the other database if the desired item is not located.  Note that some titles may be listed in both databases with one covering more years than the other.  If looking for a known article you can also search for it using Advanced Search.

Creating a Personal Database of Citations

Citations may be downloaded from Ingenta into a bibliographic management program such as Endnote.
