How to Create a Permanent URL for a Journal Title

If you have a specific journal that you like to browse on a regular basis for content, you may want to create a permanent address (URL) in your bookmarks/favorites file in order to access the journal as needed. Creating a special URL is necessary for journals that require authorization before providing online access, due to the library's license agreements with publishers.

Alternatives to creating a permanent address/URL in your bookmarks/favorites file:

• access the journal via URSUS at http://130.111.64.3/ or ejournals@umaine at http://library.umaine.edu/ejournals/
• create an alert for the journal on a publisher or database web site, and the publisher will automatically e-mail tables of contents to you as they become available; contact Reference for assistance at 581-1673 or the Science & Engineering Center at 581-1691 (NOTE: alerts will probably need to have the proxy information added as described below.)

If you prefer a direct link from the publishing site which will require authentication "behind the scenes" here are the steps:

• Identify the direct link to the journal. 
• For example the title Accident Analysis & Prevention has the following URL http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/00014575
• Add the proxy address as a prefix:
  •  http://www.library.umaine.edu/auth/EZProxy/test/authej.asp?url=
• When spliced together our example reads as follows: http://www.library.umaine.edu/auth/EZProxy/test/authej.asp?url=http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/00014575

If you already have a bookmark to a direct online source you can customize your bookmark as follows

• From you browser menu select Organize Favorites/Bookmarks
• Highlight the bookmark for the journal title
• Right click for properties
• In the resulting dialog box, copy and paste the ProxyIP address in front of the existing address for the journal in the window labled URL/location.  Do not leave any spaces
• Click OK to save
• Test link
