Library Ornament Unveiled |
|
| In this issue: |
The second annual University Bookstore Commemorative Ornament was unveiled on Thursday, September 23rd. This program is intended to celebrate and recognize UMaine organizations that best live up to the spirit of collaboration and sharing that defines the holiday season. Fogler Library was this year’s choice for the design. The choice recognized Fogler’s central role at the University as well as the Library building’s historical place on the campus. It was also a celebration of the recently completed terrace renovation project. |
| All proceeds from the sale of the ornaments are donated to university groups that best achieve the altruistic goals of helping others. For the second year, the commemorative ornament program will honor Alternative Spring Break. This organization promotes community service on the local, regional, and international levels through programs that immerse students in different cultures. The students spend their spring break performing community service and advocating lifelong social action. “The thing about Alternative Spring Break is when you think of the word altruism – wanting to do something just for the benefit of others – they are the first group many people think of on campus,” says Holly Williams, publications coordinator for the University Bookstore. The ornaments are available at the Bookstore and cost $13.99. | |
The holiday ornament is one of an increasing number of collaborations between the Library and the Bookstore. At the beginning of the Spring Semester 2004, the Bookstore, in partnership with the Library, placed a number of textbooks and required texts at the Reserve Desk in Fogler, for the use of students. Although publicity for this resource was limited, student use of these materials was significant in the first semester, and the two entities have decided to continue the program. As many of our members are aware, the author readings, book signings, and other events held at the Library are co-sponsored with the Bookstore. This allows us to reach a broader audience and to combine the author’s visit with a book signing and sale. Plans are currently underway for a University Author’s Reception, which will again bring the two units together. The reception, to be held during the spring semester, will honor University of Maine faculty and staff who have authored or edited books in the last four years. |
