Gift of Halls Mills Records
Karen Forslund Falb of Cambridge Massachusetts recently donated to Fogler Library records of Halls Mills, which had been kept by her family for several generations. The mill operated in Whiting, Maine.

Its records, which date from the early nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, provide important documentation of life in rural Washington County and are particularly important as a record of the logging industry in that part of the estate. Richard Hollinger, Head of Special Collections, explains, "We have extensive holdings relating to logging and mills, but most of these materials are from Penobscot or Aroostook Counties, or from southern Maine; we have very little from Washington County and have been seeking to build up our collection on this area."

Grant for Special Collections
Fogler's Special Collections department has been awarded $109,787 from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission for a project entitled "The Environment and Development in New England, 1758-2000." The funding will provide for an archivist and an archival assistant to process and catalog approximately one hundred manuscript collections documenting environmental history, which will significantly enhance access to and increase use of Fogler's collections. The funding will begin in November 2002.

Research Fellowship
In a national competition, Richard Hollinger, Head of Special Collections, was awarded a $10,000 research fellowship funded by the National Historical Publication and Records Commission and administered by the Massachusetts Historical Society. The fellowship will support Hollinger's research on the impact of electronic communications on historical records.
