On February 26, 2014, the Faculty Senate of the University of Maine passed a motion approving "library discard of those printed periodical volumes for which there is duplicate content in the JSTOR electronic archives purchased by the library." The full text of the motion may be found here (search the page for "JSTOR"): http://umaine.edu/facultysenate/motions-passed-2/motions-passed-2013-2014/.
Procedure for faculty who want volumes from the JSTOR journals to be discarded:
After thorough discussion with the Faculty Senate, Fogler Library will make the journals available, provided the recipient will pick them up at one or more of the four storage locations. The titles being discarded are fully backed with multiple electronic copies that are available for the community. At the suggestion of the Faculty Senate Library Committee, we will make the hard copies available free of charge prior to their disposal. Due to space and time commitments, Fogler will make the journals available provided the recipient will pick them up at one of the four storage locations and transport them without assistance from Fogler staff. All journals must be picked up this summer, during the days and times discards are being made; journals will not be held or moved for later pickup. The library expects to complete the discard process prior to the start of the Fall 2014 semester.
