Paying Charges

* If an item is owned by an URSUS library (i.e., University of Maine System Libraries, Bangor Public Library, Maine State Library, and Maine State Law & Legislative Reference Library), charges can be paid at that library as well.

Replacement charge payments are not equivalent to purchases-you are obligated to return all borrowed library items.

Troubleshooting

Start with your home library to resolve charges and fines, regardless of who owns the item(s). UMaine patrons, we are available to assist during building hours. Email circulation@umit.maine.edu, call 207.581.1641, or speak with us in-person at the Circulation Desk.

Returned Item Stills Appears in Library Record. Check your record online. If item has not been checked-in within 24 hours of return, contact your home library.

Are you absolutely sure that you returned the item?

Where and when was the item returned?

Can you identify or describe the person who accepted your return?

Did you or someone on your behalf return the item?

Was item borrowed for someone else and/or used for a group project?

Was it returned with other items?

Charges for Returned Item Still Appear on Bursar's Account (UMaine Students Only). Check your record online. If item does not appear in your library record, speak with Fogler Library Business Office staff in person or call 207.581.1663.

Waiving Fines. Fines may be waived for extenuating circumstances (e.g., a documented medical procedure). Forgetting due dates; failure to receive notices; and unawareness of policies are not legitimate reasons for waiving fines.

Avoiding Pitfalls

  • Verify that you are able to receive library notices. Notices are sent to your University of Maine System @maine.edu account (viewable in UMS Google Apps). If you do not use UMS Google Apps, forward @maine.edu email to your client (e.g., FirstClass, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc).

  • Know when borrowed items are due. Check URSUS and ILLiad (if you borrowed from the Interlibrary Loan Department), accounts.

  • Act on notices immediately (i.e., contact staff or, if possible, renew items online).

  • Neither use your card to borrow items for someone else nor let someone else use your card.

  • Handle items with care:
Inform staff if an item you are about to borrow is damaged.
Avoid exposing items to high humidity, rain, and snow.
Be mindful of using library items around food and drink.
            Keep away from pets.
            Do not mark.
            Do not fold.
Do not remove pages (in whole or in part), covers, labels, etc.
Do not leave Post-It notes and/or bookmarks in returned items.
Do not attempt to repair damage.
